I started by working backwards from Match Day and ERAS deadlines. My plan looked like this:

Step 1: Gave it about 12–15 months before applying, so I had time to strengthen my CV with research and electives.

Step 2 CK: Scheduled right before ERAS submission (July–Aug) so my score was ready for programs to review.

ERAS Application: Submitted on the very first day it opened timing matters for interview invites.

Interviews: Blocked off Oct–Jan, prioritizing programs that aligned with my specialty goals.

What really helped was keeping a spreadsheet to track deadlines, documents, and communication with programs. I also sought advice from seniors who had already matched — their timeline feedback saved me from last-minute stress.

My advice: plan early, stay flexible, and always build in extra time for unexpected delays (like score releases or LORs).
